Draw and Watercolor through History
2022
Watercolor Circle of Learning
membership course
This four-module series on the history of painting
is designed for intermediate and advanced watercolor painters.
That being said, you are welcome to participate for the slide lectures and discussions.
Divided into four parts of eight lessons each,
each part looks through a specific lens to examine the evolution of (mostly) Western painting.
•
Watercolor through History
traces the development and various usages of watercolor and water-based mediums
from the prehistoric through the turn of the 20th century.
Drawing from History
is an overview of Western painting focusing on the figure and portrait
and specific, influential artists who embody a turning point in painting
or present the essence of a particular age or region.
We begin in the Medieval period and land at the turn of the 20th century.
This is the most traditionally framed course during which we learn the
basic conventions of looking at paintings.
Landscape into Art
examines the depiction of landscape and development of landscape painting in (mostly) Western art
from Roman ruins through the early 20th century.
Modern Painting
sorts through what happened to painting in the 20th century, who made changes and why.
The second half of this course shows you how to visit and explore
great museum collections around the world.
•
In these systematic, step-by-step series of courses,
each lesson includes a slide lecture, relevant links for deeper study on your own,
recommended supplemental reading
and a weekly assignment to copy one of the paintings we cover in that lesson
in a watercolor or drawing medium.
This is art history through the idiosyncratic eye
of an artist (moi) who has been painting since the age of five
and immersed in the history of painting (and music and literature and film)
for at least as long.
It's fun and fascinating and utterly unique.

Inevitably, these and other benefits that come with the practice of drawing and watercolor enhance your life in positive ways that will surprise you! You don't need any experience to take any of my courses. All you need is a desire to draw and watercolor. My courses are designed for closet (or shadow) artists, and for professionals outside the field of visual arts. |
