I can point to several influences by the age of five that secured my path to becoming a watercolor painter. Gertrude Elliott Espensheid's illustrations for The Tall Book of Christmas were a very strong shaping factor. While all of Espensheid's pictures are (really) wonderful, the ones for Granny Glittens set me up for a lifetime of lusting after vibrant colors.
I also just realized that Gertrude Crampton proffered the idea that we can sell the art we like to make, and that there is nothing like having to put food on the table (and in the cat's bowl) to awaken creative invention.
It's my personal tradition to re-read The Tall Book of Christmas every year. This year, I'm sharing part of it here with you. Enjoy!
